Daniel Lee is the chief creative officer of Burberry, where he has overseen every collection since 3 October 2022. The exact date matters: Burberry announced him on 28 September, but its own appointment notice says that he joined the following Monday. Before returning to London, Lee spent three intense years transforming Bottega Veneta from a discreet leather house into one of fashion's most visible makers of bags, shoes and ready-to-wear. (Burberry; Kering)

His work is direct, product-minded and unusually sensitive to the social life of a house code. At Bottega, he enlarged woven leather until it read across a room and made a soft, apparently logo-free clutch into an identifying object. At Burberry, he has worked through a different problem: how to make the trench, check and equestrian knight feel British without reducing Britain to a souvenir shop. The results have sometimes been uneven, but the method is consistent. Lee begins with what a house can materially make, then asks which objects can carry its identity into everyday life.

Bradford, London and the design studio

Lee was born in 1986 and raised in Bradford, West Yorkshire, the eldest of three children. Fashion was not the family profession—his brother became a plumber and his sister a nurse—but manufacturing was close at hand. Castleford, where Burberry makes its heritage trench coats, and Keighley, associated with its gabardine production, sit near Bradford; members of his mother's family had worked for suppliers to the company. That local connection would acquire professional meaning much later. (Vogue)

He studied at Central Saint Martins in London and completed the MA Fashion course led by Louise Wilson. The programme's reputation rests less on teaching a house style than on forcing designers to identify and defend their own decisions. Lee graduated in 2011, then built his career inside other companies rather than launching a namesake label. He worked at Maison Margiela, Balenciaga and Donna Karan before joining Phoebe Philo's Céline in 2012. (Burberry; Vogue)

At Céline he rose to director of ready-to-wear design. The six-year period gave him a close education in clothes that communicate through proportion, material and use rather than conspicuous branding: exact trousers, spare knitwear, strong footwear and bags with enough character to become daily tools. Lee's later work should not be treated as an imitation of Philo's, but Céline taught him how a complete luxury wardrobe can be built around recognisable products without surrendering intellectual rigour. (Burberry; Vogue)

Lee became creative director of Bottega Veneta on 1 July 2018, succeeding Tomas Maier. He inherited a company famous for Intrecciato, the technique of weaving narrow leather strips into a flexible surface, and for the slogan “When your own initials are enough.” His first task was therefore not to invent discretion, but to make discretion visually forceful for a generation accustomed to instantly legible products. (Kering; Kering's 2019 activity report)

The Pouch supplied the answer. Designed soon after his arrival and released with the Spring 2019 offer, it gathered soft leather around a concealed rigid frame. The bag had no external wordmark, but its exaggerated, hand-filling volume made it unmistakable. Lee told Vogue España that it became the most successful bag in Bottega Veneta's history. The Maxi Cabat made an existing house technique newly graphic by increasing the scale of the weave; the Cassette then organised broad Intrecciato strips into a padded grid. Square-toed Lido sandals, Stretch pumps and heavy Tire boots extended the same bold geometry to footwear. (Vogue España; British Vogue; Kering)

Those successes can obscure the clothes. Lee's first runway collection, Fall 2019, placed substantial leather coats, compact knits and sharp tailoring around a body that looked protected rather than decorated. Colour—acid green, turquoise, orange and deep brown—prevented the restraint from becoming polite. His later Salon presentations moved outside the conventional Milan calendar; Salon 03, staged in Detroit in October 2021, connected industrial design, electronic music and the technical ingenuity of both cities. (Vogue Runway; GQ)

Bottega's withdrawal from Instagram in January 2021 made Lee's suspicion of routine digital exposure into a company-wide gesture. The house replaced an endlessly refreshed feed with periodic digital journals and physical events. It did not disappear from social media—customers and publications circulated the products constantly—but it gave up direct control of the platform at precisely the moment its colour and accessories were most recognisable. (Vogue)

Lee and Bottega Veneta announced a “joint decision” to end their collaboration on 10 November 2021. The short statement praised his contribution but gave no reason; later reporting and online speculation cannot responsibly fill that silence. What is documented is the scale of the change. In 2019 he became the first person to win four categories in one night at the Fashion Awards, and products developed during his tenure continued to shape the house after his departure. (Kering; Vogue)

Burberry and the argument about Britishness

Burberry appointed Lee to succeed Riccardo Tisci in 2022. He returned to a company known everywhere, but carrying several competing identities: Thomas Burberry's weatherproof outerwear, military trench coats, the beige check, Christopher Bailey's romantic Britain and the street associations that the check acquired in the 1990s and 2000s. Lee identified three working codes—the check, the Equestrian Knight Design and gabardine—and visited the archive and British production sites before his debut. (Burberry; Vogue)

The first public signal was a new identity developed with art director Peter Saville. A redrawn version of the 1901 knight returned in vivid blue, together with a serif Burberry wordmark; the “TB” monogram of the Tisci period receded. “Knight blue” then spread through packaging, campaigns and products. This was a revival, not a newly invented logo. Lee's authorship lies in selecting, redrawing and recirculating an archival mark until it could once again perform as the house's signature. (Vogue Business; Burberry Fall 2023 collection notes)

His Fall 2023 runway debut refused a tasteful parade of beige trenches. Checks appeared in purple, yellow and red; faux fur, blanket coats, duck prints, trapper hats and graphic band-style T-shirts proposed Britain as eccentric, cold, musical and class-mixed. Hot-water bottles became accessories. The collection's humour divided viewers, but it made a useful point: Britishness is not one aristocratic uniform. (Associated Press; British Vogue)

The seasons that followed gradually tightened that abundance. Spring 2024 cut familiar wardrobe forms closer to the body and established leather bags including the Knight and Shield, while later collections returned more decisively to coats, capes and weather. Fall 2025 imagined the Friday escape from London to a country house; Spring 2026 turned the British music festival into a wardrobe of fringed outerwear, crochet, leather and check. The settings—parks, Tate Britain, Kensington Palace grounds and finally the City of London—have made Lee's Burberry as much a changing map of the country as a single silhouette. (Burberry Spring 2024 collection notes; British Vogue; AnOther)

Burberry's falling sales during part of Lee's tenure placed this work under unusual public pressure. A designer does not control price architecture, store distribution or the luxury cycle alone, yet the chief creative officer is responsible for giving those systems desirable objects to sell. The stronger Winter 2025 and Winter 2026 collections responded by bringing the trench and outerwear back to the centre rather than asking new bags and branding to carry the whole recovery. As of September 2026, Lee remains in post and Burberry describes Winter 2026 as his latest collection. (Le Monde; Burberry; British Vogue)

Reading and dating Daniel Lee's work

For Bottega Veneta, “Daniel Lee era” should describe designs from Spring 2019 through the Salon 03 collection, not every Pouch or Cassette manufactured after November 2021. Continuing colourways and later modifications may have been developed by the studio or by his successor, Matthieu Blazy. The large-scale weave, padded grids and square toes are useful visual clues, but the season and product code carry more evidence than resemblance.

At Burberry, Lee's first runway season is Fall 2023. The revived knight, serif wordmark and knight-blue packaging help identify his reset, but none proves that he designed an older trench: the Equestrian Knight originated in 1901, and the check and gabardine long predate every living Burberry designer. Attribute the specific cut, fabrication and season. A heritage code belongs to the house; a designer's contribution is what they make it do.
