Olivier Rousteing
French designer who led Balmain for fourteen years, 2011 to 2025, and became Rabanne's creative director in July 2026.
Olivier Rousteing became Rabanne’s creative director in July 2026 after fourteen years at Balmain. He took the Balmain job at 25 and developed a recognisable look of close tailoring, strong shoulders and lavish embellishment. His celebrity circle brought those clothes far beyond the runway, but the workmanship of a beaded jacket or sculpted dress remained central to their appeal. (Puig; WWD)
Bordeaux, an adoption, and Roberto Cavalli
Rousteing grew up in Bordeaux and moved to Paris to study at ESMOD. He left the school early and began working for Roberto Cavalli in 2003, rising through its womenswear studio over the next five years. (Istituto Marangoni)
Balmain: from the studio to the top job
Balmain hired Rousteing in 2009 to work in its women's ready-to-wear studio under Christophe Decarnin. When Decarnin left in 2011, the house promoted Rousteing to creative director. At 25, he inherited a sharply tailored, richly embellished wardrobe and the task of making it his own. (Business of Fashion)
Rousteing inherited Decarnin's sharpened, heavily embellished silhouette and pushed it toward a harder, more sculptural line: strong shoulders, military detailing, and a jewelled hardware vocabulary that read clearly at a distance and, increasingly, on a phone screen. Balmain's menswear line, which had existed quietly for years, was given its own dedicated runway presence starting with the Spring 2016 men's show, and grew under him into a substantial share of the house's revenue. The Balmain Army beyond the runway
Rousteing called the models, musicians and friends who wore Balmain the Balmain Army. Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner were among its most visible members. Their photographs carried his sharply shouldered jackets and heavily worked dresses to an audience that might never see a runway show. (Dazed; WWD)
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West fronted Balmain's Spring 2015 menswear campaign, described by Rousteing as capturing "a moment of love" between two friends of the house, and the relationship continued through Balmain's involvement in West's 2016 "Wolves" video and Rousteing dressing the extended Kardashian-Jenner family for that year's Met Gala. The same distribution logic scaled up in November 2015, when Balmain and H&M released a single collaborative collection — womenswear, menswear and accessories — sold online and in roughly 250 stores worldwide, announced by Rousteing from the red carpet at the Billboard Music Awards. Reinstating couture, and the Beyoncé collaborations
Balmain had made no couture since 2002. With backing from Mayhoola for Investments, which bought the house in 2016, Rousteing built up an atelier over several years and returned Balmain to the official Paris couture calendar as a guest member in January 2019 — its first couture show in sixteen years. (Refinery29)
Beyoncé became Rousteing's most sustained celebrity collaborator across this period. In 2018, after Balmain designed pieces for her Coachella headline set, the two released a capsule collection of the same HBCU-inspired sweatshirts, with proceeds going to the United Negro College Fund. Balmain looks also appeared throughout Beyoncé's 2020 visual album Black Is King. The partnership culminated in a couture collection Beyoncé co-designed with Rousteing over several months, inspired song-by-song by her 2022 album Renaissance and unveiled in 2023. A public search, and a private injury made public
In 2019, Rousteing made his search for his biological parents the subject of the documentary Wonder Boy, directed by Anissa Bonnefont. He had been given up at birth and adopted at one year old with no information about his origins; the film follows him tracing his biological mother, from Djibouti, and father, Ethiopian, discovering an African heritage he had not known growing up. Rousteing has spoken about the process as one of understanding rather than grievance toward his adoptive parents, who raised him. (Hollywood Insider)
In October 2021, Rousteing disclosed on Instagram that he had suffered serious burns in a fireplace explosion at his Paris home a year earlier, in October 2020, and had spent the intervening year concealing the injuries in interviews and public appearances out of shame. He said he was "finally ready to share" the experience and later described a subsequent collection as informed by "healing over pain." (CNN; The Grio)
Departure, and Rabanne
Rousteing left Balmain in November 2025. Puig appointed him creative director of Rabanne the following July, succeeding Julien Dossena. The move takes a designer who made elaborate surface work his signature to a house with its own history of metal, shine and clothes assembled from unusual materials. (Puig; Fashionista)
Labels, dating and how to read the work
Rousteing's Balmain runs across two distinct periods that resale listings routinely blur into one. From 2009 to April 2011 he worked inside the ready-to-wear studio under Decarnin; garments from that period carry Decarnin's design authorship even though Rousteing's studio produced them. Everything from 26 April 2011 to November 2025 is his sole creative direction, and it should still be split further: ready-to-wear and accessories from that whole span, menswear from Spring 2016 onward, and couture only from January 2019 onward, since Balmain made none between 2002 and that show.
The November 2015 Balmain x H&M capsule is a separate, frequent resale problem. Those pieces were manufactured and labelled as an H&M collaboration line, not as Balmain mainline product — they carry H&M's own labelling and construction standards, sit at H&M price points rather than Balmain's, and were never part of a numbered Balmain season. A hoodie or jacket from that release is correctly described as "Balmain x H&M," never simply as "Balmain," and its value and materials differ accordingly from a garment out of the Paris atelier.
Any Rabanne garment attributed to Rousteing needs the same caution his Balmain pieces required at the other end of his career: nothing designed under his direction had reached shops as of his appointment, so a Rabanne piece sold now was necessarily conceived under Julien Dossena, whatever a listing might imply about the house's "new era."
