Atsuro Tayama trained at Y's under Yohji Yamamoto, then built two very different careers of his own. A.T and ATSURO TAYAMA brought commercially minded city dressing to Tokyo and Paris; behind the labels, he also directed collections for apparel groups, department stores and uniform clients. Much of that contract work does not carry his name, so attribution begins with the garment's actual brand rather than with a general resemblance to his namesake collections. He remained active in 2025 through VOYAGE BY ATSURO TAYAMA, a collaboration with the mail-order catalogue Kurashi to Seikyo. (JCCU)

Kumamoto to the Paris ready-to-wear circuit

Tayama was born on 30 January 1955 in Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu. (Fashion Headline; Soen) He graduated from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo in 1975 and, in the same year, won the 14th High Fashion Pierre Cardin Award, a prize the French couturier endowed for the college's own graduating designers rather than an open industry award. He joined Y's, Yohji Yamamoto's company, straight out of college, and in 1978 moved to Paris to help set up Yohji Yamamoto's European operation. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site; Bunka Gakuen University)

According to a 2014 profile, part of what pushed him back out on his own was watching classmates from his Bunka cohort — Chisato Tsumori, who would go on to found Tsumori Chisato, and the stylist and designer Don Konishi — launch their own labels and draw attention while he was still working for someone else. He left Y's, returned to Japan, and in 1982 founded his own company and its first line, A.T, showing it in the Tokyo Collections from 1984. (Fashion Headline) In 1986 he won the 10th Mainichi Fashion Award's New Designer Prize together with a Shiseido Encouragement Prize. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site)

Independence, and a second move to Paris

Tayama returned to France in 1989, established A.T France s.a., and started the label that carries his own name, ATSURO TAYAMA. From 1990 he held a womenswear designer contract with Cacharel, the French ready-to-wear house then known for soft, printed, feminine dressing; the brand's own chronology gives the contract as running to 1994, while a Fashion Headline profile extends it to 1995. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site; Fashion Headline) ATSURO TAYAMA presented at the Paris prêt-à-porter collections from 1991, a run that continued for nearly three decades until 2018. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site) In 1996 he received the 40th Japan Fashion Editors Club Award's Designer Prize. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site)

Creative director: two decades inside other people's brands

Running a Paris collection did not become Tayama's only, or even his main, source of income. From 1992 to 2005 he held a creative-director contract with World Co., the Kobe-based apparel group, across a cluster of its brands — OZOC, INDIVI, BOYCOTT, VOICE MAIL and COUP DE CHANCE. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site) That arrangement — a named designer supplying seasonal direction to a company brand that carries its own label, not his — repeats through the rest of his career. Company records list, among others: Nagaileben's nurse and doctor uniform licence from 1999; a director's contract for Renown's Aquascutum UK Label from 2005 to 2006; a creative-director contract with the Hempel China Group from 2006 to 2009; Uny's DEMI ETAGE from 2007 to 2020; Sogo-Seibu's LIMITED EDITION by ATSURO TAYAMA from 2009 to 2018; Takakyu's m.f.editorial from 2009 to 2024, and its ON THE DAY from 2017 to 2019; Ito-Yokado's GALLORIA from 2010, and a further main-floor director contract from 2018 to 2020; the Fujian-based Seven Group's SEVEN from 2012 to 2014; and Sumisho Brand Management's NARA CAMICIE from 2015 to 2018. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site) In 2005 he also became an advisor to CrossPlus, the women's and children's apparel manufacturer that has operated both ATSURO TAYAMA and A.T since taking full ownership of the two brands that year; company retail listings in Japan generally render his name in katakana as アツロウ タヤマ. (Fashion Guide; CrossPlus)

The largest of these outside commissions was institutional rather than retail. Tayama designed All Nippon Airways' ninth-generation cabin-crew uniform and the airline group's sixth-generation ground-staff uniform, both introduced in 2005 to mark ANA's 50th anniversary and its move into Haneda Airport's second terminal, and both in service until 2015. (ANA) A uniform commission of this kind is judged on different terms from a runway collection: it has to survive years of daily wear across a large, mixed workforce, coordinate with a corporate colour identity, and pass a customer-facing selection process. ANA had Tayama produce three finished proposals and put them to a passenger feedback period running from 1 to 30 June 2004 before the design that reached service in 2005 was chosen. (ANA)

Uniforms, gardens, and staying visible under his own name

Alongside the contract work, Tayama has kept a foothold in front-facing design under his own name. Since 1998 he has served as a judge of the Soen Award, the design competition run by his alma mater's publishing arm and one of the routes by which young Japanese designers are still found. (Soen) He also holds an academic post as a Special Appointment Professor at Bunka Gakuen University, the institution that grew out of his own design school. (Bunka Gakuen University)

In October 2021, CrossPlus launched ART OF GARDEN, an apparel line Tayama developed out of his own gardening — an interest that began with a small plot at his Tokyo home, deepened over twenty years living in Paris and studying European garden design, and fed into a large garden he has since built in the Aso region of his native Kumamoto. The collection's signature piece is a detachable mini-apron, sized to hold sunglasses, a hand trowel and a bottle, designed to be worn over ATSURO TAYAMA's regular town clothes rather than as separate workwear. It launched with pop-up stores at Ginza Matsuya from 13 to 19 October 2021 and at Osaka Takashimaya the following fortnight, alongside a run at Sogo's Causeway Bay store in Hong Kong. (CrossPlus) The Aso garden itself — roughly 3,500 tsubo, or about 11,600 square metres — was covered the following year by the horticultural publication THE FLOWER JOURNAL under the title "the grand winter garden fashion designer Atsuro Tayama built in Kumamoto and Aso, the 'land of fire.'" (CrossPlus) The project makes the Kumamoto connection something more than a biographical footnote: gardening is now a design subject Tayama returns to under his own name, in the same region where he was born.

Reading and dating the work

A garment carrying an ATSURO TAYAMA or A.T label is different from one Tayama designed for another company. Since 2005, CrossPlus has positioned ATSURO TAYAMA as the more expensive department-store line and A.T as the less expensive, ageless line; A.T moved online-only from Autumn/Winter 2019. A namesake piece from Tayama's 1991–2018 Paris runway period should also be distinguished from later department-store stock made after the Paris shows ended. (Fashion Guide; ATSURO TAYAMA official site)

Work made under Tayama's creative-director contracts is a separate category and usually carries only the client's label. Pieces from OZOC, INDIVI, DEMI ETAGE, LIMITED EDITION by ATSURO TAYAMA, m.f.editorial, GALLORIA or NARA CAMICIE can be attributed to him only within the documented years of the relevant contract. ANA and Nagaileben uniforms sit outside retail altogether; ANA's own records date his cabin-crew and ground-staff designs to 2005–2015 even though the garments do not carry his name. (ANA)

The safe workflow is simple: identify the exact brand on the label, establish when Tayama worked for that client, then compare the garment with dated company material. A general "Atsuro Tayama" attribution cannot bridge separate runway, retail and uniform archives. (ATSURO TAYAMA official site)
