Miguel Castro Freitas has been the creative director of Mugler since 1 April 2025, having been appointed a week earlier to succeed Casey Cadwallader, who had led the house for seven years. The Portuguese designer arrived with a two-decade apprenticeship behind him at Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Dries Van Noten, and described the job as a return to the source: Mugler's runway photographs, torn from the back pages of a television guide, were what first made him want to work in fashion at all. (Dazed; FashionUnited; System)

That homecoming has not been sentimental in method. His stated project at Mugler is to take the house's best-known signals — glamour, power dressing, the femme fatale — and deconstruct them one at a time, treating cliché as material worth examining rather than something to avoid. "They are clichés for a reason, because they are universal statements," he has said of the approach. (System)

He has also framed the job as a rejection of a wider industry mood. Castro Freitas describes contemporary fashion as having become "pretty beige," driven by "a corporate hunger for commerciality" at the expense of the qualities that drew him to it in the first place, and argues for treating fashion as what he calls an "eighth art" — a discipline that works simultaneously with cloth, photography, film and the choreography of a body in space, rather than one measured only by how well a garment sells. (System)

Santarém, a tailor's workbench, and a torn-out magazine page

Castro Freitas grew up in Santarém, a town roughly an hour from Lisbon, in a household with no interest in fashion beyond the television guide his family kept in the house. From around the age of six he pored over its back pages, which carried colour photographs of Paris runway shows, and became fixated on Thierry Mugler's own collections during what the designer has called the house's mid-1980s heyday, ripping out and keeping every page. His grandfather, who had apprenticed at 13 to the most prominent tailor in northern Portugal before becoming a farmer, taught him to cut and sew a jacket at his grandparents' house when he was ten; Castro Freitas still has the paper pattern. He has also credited a local sex worker, remembered for her leather suits and patent stilettos, as his first style icon, and cites childhood television screenings of David Lynch and David Cronenberg as formative to how he thinks about image-making. (System)

The route to a career came through a February 1996 issue of i-D, bought in his hometown, which closed with a short interview with Alexander McQueen mentioning that he had studied at Central Saint Martins; on learning that John Galliano had gone there too, Castro Freitas decided that was where he would go. He graduated in womenswear at the end of 2004 with a collection built around an aristocratic family stranded in a forest with no access to the outside world — deliberately poor materials worked with elaborate technique, a method he has described as making a virtue of a student budget. (System)

A quarter-century of other people's ateliers

His first job, straight out of college, was with John Galliano at Dior, where he worked on the Autumn/Winter 2005–06 haute couture show marking the centenary of Christian Dior's birth — "the show with all the horses and carriages, everything in tulle." He stayed two and a half years before moving to Yves Saint Laurent under Stefano Pilati, a shift he later called "almost like black and white, yin and yang," and remained there for three years. From Saint Laurent he went to Lanvin under Alber Elbaz, joining a small team that worked fabric directly on the stand rather than by sketching at a desk, through the period of Elbaz's tenth anniversary at the house. (System)

He then returned to Dior a decade after his first stint there, this time as Head of Tailoring under Raf Simons, a designer he has said he identified with for coming to fashion from industrial design rather than a fashion education; he stayed roughly a year beyond Simons's own departure from the house. From there he moved to Antwerp as Head of Womenswear at Dries Van Noten, drawn to what he called "the Belgian school of thought, that cerebral approach to fashion," commuting between Antwerp during the week and Paris at weekends. He subsequently spent three years as creative director of Sportmax, spanning its Spring/Summer 2021 through Spring/Summer 2024 collections, before Mugler approached him. A trilogy of glorified clichés

Castro Freitas presented his first Mugler collection, Stardust Aphrodite, on 2 October 2025 in a Paris underground car park dressed as a miniature Las Vegas. Framed as "part one of a trilogy deconstructing the essence of Mugler," it drew on old-Hollywood femme-fatale archetypes — Mildred Pierce, three different screen Lolas, the 1929 musical Glorifying the American Girl — rendered in leather, latex, wool and jersey and held to a strict palette of camel, beige and black, with stars, a symbol from both his own childhood drawings and Mugler's own iconography, as the only ornament. Reception was mixed: reviewers credited the research behind it while finding the restraint it imposed on Mugler's usual spectacle hard to warm to. One reappropriated 1998 archive look, a gown suspended from nipple rings, went on to cause an online stir after the singer Chappell Roan customised and wore a version of it to the Grammy Awards; Castro Freitas has defended the piece as "a message, a question" whose meaning depends on the collection around it rather than the image in isolation. (System; nss magazine)

His second collection, The Commander, billed as Part 2 of the same trilogy, was shown on 10 March 2026 at the Palais de la Porte Dorée. It examined power dressing through a wider historical range than the debut — military tailoring, seventeenth-century court coats, Art Deco geometry and 1980s corporate styling — worked in shearling, printed silk, metallic leather and lamé, with sculpted shoulders and cinched waists throughout. Castro Freitas framed the collection as a statement about "self-empowerment" against "the oppressive forces and grey political climate" of the moment, and it was more warmly received than his debut, praised as confident and pointed in its handling of power-dressing clichés. Labels, dating and how to read the work

As of September 2026, only two Mugler collections carry Castro Freitas's name: Stardust Aphrodite (Spring/Summer 2026) and The Commander (Autumn/Winter 2026–27), both described by the house as instalments of a single trilogy rather than freestanding seasons. Garments designed under Cadwallader between 2018 and his 2025 departure continue to sell alongside newer stock on the same shop floors and resale listings, so the season code on a Mugler label is a more reliable guide to authorship than the calendar date of a sale. Pieces from Stardust Aphrodite tend toward a restrained camel-beige-black palette with star motifs as the sole embellishment, while The Commander introduces brighter, more graphic colourwork and overtly military detailing — a useful visual shorthand for telling the two collections apart until a third instalment of the trilogy complicates the picture further.
