NIGO

Japanese creative director who founded BAPE and Human Made and now leads Kenzo, connecting Harajuku street culture, collecting and global luxury.

NIGO is the professional name of Tomoaki Nagao, the Japanese creative director who founded A Bathing Ape, left it in 2013, built Human Made, and has served as artistic director of Kenzo since September 2021. The distinction between those tenures matters. He is still routinely described online as BAPE's designer, but he has had no design role there for more than thirteen years. As of September 2026, his continuing work is Human Made and Kenzo, alongside music, interiors and cultural direction. (Sō-en Online; WWD Japan; Kenzo)

NIGO's influence is larger than a list of ape heads, camouflage and limited trainers. He helped establish a system in which a small Tokyo shop could edit clothing, records, toys, graphics and friendships into a global culture. Product scarcity, collaboration and collecting became creative media in their own right. The later movement of streetwear designers into European luxury cannot be reduced to one person, but BAPE demonstrated early that cultural authority could travel from Harajuku to musicians and collectors abroad without first being authorised by a Paris runway. (GQ Japan; Kenzo)

Becoming “number two”

Nagao was born in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, in 1970 and studied fashion editing at Bunka Fashion College, graduating in 1991. The course suited his eventual practice: he was interested not only in making clothes but in placing objects, images and music in relation to one another. At school he met Jun Takahashi, who studied apparel design one year ahead of him. Their shared interest in punk, club culture and clothing began a partnership that would help define Ura-Harajuku. (Sō-en Online; Fashionsnap)

The nickname NIGO came from his resemblance to Hiroshi Fujiwara: 二号 (nigō) means “number two”. Through Fujiwara and the wider club scene, Nagao worked as an assistant, stylist, DJ and magazine editor. He and Takahashi began the Takarajima column Last Orgy 2 in 1992, inheriting the title and curatorial format from Fujiwara and Kan Takagi. Before social media, a magazine page could make a record, vintage sweatshirt or obscure imported shoe newly legible to readers across Japan. (Fashionsnap)

In April 1993 NIGO and Takahashi opened NOWHERE on a quiet Harajuku backstreet. Takahashi sold Undercover on one side; NIGO sold imported trainers and clothing on the other. In November, NIGO and graphic designer SKATETHING began A Bathing Ape there. The store became part of a local network that included Neighborhood, WTAPS, Goodenough and Bounty Hunter—independent projects that wore, stocked and collaborated with one another until the neighbourhood itself became an international point of reference. BAPE and the design of desire

The full name A Bathing Ape in Lukewarm Water played on the Japanese expression ぬるま湯に浸かった猿 (nurumayu ni tsukatta saru), an ape soaking complacently in lukewarm water, as well as Planet of the Apes. SKATETHING developed the Ape Head graphic and the brand built an immediately readable vocabulary: ABC camouflage, college lettering, cartoon characters, the shark hood and the star-sided BAPE STA trainer. NIGO's achievement was editorial and operational as much as graphic. Each reference joined a coherent environment of shop design, packaging, music and release rituals. (Fashionsnap; Sō-en Online)

Early quantities were extremely small. New products drew queues, sold out and moved into resale at multiples of retail price. That economy turned access into part of a garment's meaning, long before “drop” became general industry vocabulary. It also generated copying and counterfeiting, while the BAPE STA deliberately occupied the unstable line between homage and appropriation by transforming the familiar construction of a Nike Air Force 1 into BAPE's own graphic platform. The products were playful, but their distribution reorganised how desire could be built around street clothing. (Fashionsnap; Design Museum)

Music carried that system abroad. NIGO formed relationships with Pharrell Williams, the Neptunes, KAWS and Futura; helped establish Billionaire Boys Club and Icecream with Pharrell; and became DJ of the Teriyaki Boyz. By the early 2000s, BAPE appeared throughout American hip-hop not simply as Japanese merchandise but as evidence of participation in NIGO's network. His collections—vintage furniture, watches, records, toys and art as well as clothes—functioned as a working archive from which collaborations and new settings could be edited. (GQ Japan; Kenzo)

This curatorial authorship is easy to underestimate because NIGO often describes himself as an editor rather than a designer. Editing here includes choosing the historical source, commissioning graphics, setting scarcity, directing a shop, approving samples and placing the finished thing into music and friendship networks. SKATETHING's role in BAPE graphics and the work of later design teams should remain visible, but collective production does not make NIGO's direction incidental. It explains where his authorship actually operates. (Fashionsnap; HUMAN MADE investor document)

Leaving the ape behind

Rapid expansion strained the company behind BAPE. NIGO sold it to Hong Kong retailer I.T in 2011 and remained under contract for two more years. That contract ended on 30 April 2013, closing a twenty-year design tenure. The sale and departure separate authorship clearly: a BAPE garment made after April 2013 may develop imagery created during NIGO's era, but it is not a new NIGO design merely because it carries the Ape Head. (Livedoor News)

NIGO had already started Human Made in 2010. Its phrase “The Future Is in the Past” describes a quieter form of his editing. Mid-century American workwear, military garments, loopwheel sweats, souvenir jackets and advertising mascots are reconstructed through Japanese manufacturing and his comic visual language. BAPE magnified contemporary street energy; Human Made more often asks what construction, cloth and humour allow an older object to live again. Hearts, ducks, tigers and dry slogans preserve the instant recognition, but the garments invite attention to chain stitch, weave and wash. (Human Made; Fashionsnap)

Human Made has since become an institution rather than a designer's private studio. The company listed publicly in Tokyo in 2025 and shifted day-to-day executive leadership from NIGO to Rei Matsunuma, while NIGO remained founder, major shareholder and creative director. This division makes his current role more exact: he sets themes, reviews development and quality and directs culture, but professional management operates the growing company. (WWD Japan; HUMAN MADE investor document)

In June 2026 the company signed a non-binding basic agreement to pursue the acquisition of Undercover. The disclosed schedule aimed for completion in February 2027, and Takahashi and NIGO supported the proposal, but it remained a negotiation at the time of writing. The potential transaction has unusual historical symmetry: the two halves of NOWHERE would enter one corporate group while retaining separate creative identities. (HUMAN MADE filing; Fashionsnap)

Kenzo and the work of inheritance

Kenzo appointed NIGO on 15 September 2021, effective 20 September. It was his first long-term responsibility for a house he had not founded. He approached it as an archivist and director: teams received images and source material rather than a demand to imitate his hand, while Kenzo Takada's prints, workwear, colour and encounters between Japan and Paris were studied as active tools. NIGO's debut, shown in January 2022 at Galerie Vivienne where Takada had presented in 1970, joined Japanese denim, varsity clothing, tailoring and the house's poppy motif. (WWD Japan; Vogue Japan; GQ Japan)

The appointment did not simply “bring streetwear” to a luxury house. Takada and NIGO belonged to different generations, but both filtered fascination with Western clothing back through a Japanese eye and built communities around dress. NIGO's Kenzo collections work best when that parallel is specific—archival floral drawings against denim, kimono construction against tailoring, or Ivy League codes against Parisian colour—rather than when the founder's name becomes a general licence for nostalgia. He remains in the role in September 2026, and the house describes current menswear and womenswear as Kenzo by NIGO. (Kenzo; Kenzo)

The Design Museum in London made this expanded idea of his practice the subject of NIGO: From Japan with Love in 2026, his first retrospective. More than seven hundred objects connected fashion to music, ceramics, architecture and interiors, including a reconstruction of his teenage room. The accumulation was not background decoration around the clothes. It demonstrated a career built by preserving objects, noticing relationships between them and then giving those relationships a new public form. (Kenzo)

Reading NIGO's labels

Authorship begins with brand and date. NIGO-era BAPE runs from November 1993 through 30 April 2013; later BAPE belongs to the continuing house. Human Made begins in 2010 and remains under his creative direction. Kenzo by NIGO begins with his effective appointment in September 2021, with the first retail collection for Autumn/Winter 2022. Billionaire Boys Club, Icecream, Uniqlo UT and Louis Vuitton LV² were partnerships or outside appointments and should not be relabelled as BAPE or Human Made. (Sō-en Online; WWD Japan)

For resale, record the complete neck and care labels, product code, country of manufacture and any collaboration partner. BAPE's recurring camo and characters can identify a design family but not a year; reissues and post-NIGO versions are common. Human Made season numbering and product codes offer firmer evidence, while Kenzo pieces require the collection date to distinguish NIGO from earlier directors. The presence of one of his long-used motifs is never stronger evidence than the label's actual production context. (Sō-en Online; Kenzo)
