Pharrell Williams
American producer and designer, co-founder of Billionaire Boys Club and Louis Vuitton's menswear creative director since 2023.
Pharrell Williams became Louis Vuitton’s menswear creative director in February 2023, bringing years of design work to the role. He had co-founded Billionaire Boys Club, worked with Adidas and collaborated with Vuitton on Blason jewellery in 2008. His first menswear show filled Paris’s Pont Neuf with Damier check and turned a house pattern into the setting for an unusually public debut. (Hypebeast; Washington Post)
Music made Williams famous, but clothes have occupied him for more than two decades. With Nigo he built Billionaire Boys Club around graphic streetwear; with Adidas he developed vividly coloured sneakers; at Vuitton he works on tailoring, bags and the visual world around them. His collections often make an established symbol feel louder and more playful. (Complex; Washington Post)
From a Virginia Beach band room to Billionaire Boys Club
Williams grew up in Virginia Beach and first made his name in music with Chad Hugo as the Neptunes. His interest in clothes developed through a friendship with Nigo, the designer behind A Bathing Ape, whom he met on a trip to Tokyo. (Footasylum)
Williams founded Billionaire Boys Club with Nigo, Rob Walker and graphic designer Sk8thing in 2003. The astronaut logo and bold graphics gave the label a look distinct from the sportswear brands already worn in hip-hop; the skate-focused Ice Cream footwear line followed in 2004. Williams kept developing the business even as his collaborations with established houses grew. (Complex)
Adidas: a house code built from one silhouette
Williams's partnership with Adidas Originals began in 2014 with a small run of collaborative Stan Smith styles, followed in 2015 by a fifty-shoe Superstar Supercolor collection. The union found its lasting form in 2016 with the NMD Hu — a reworking of the NMD running shoe finished in bold colourways and large embroidered slogans ("human species", "breathe thoughts"), first released in July of that year. The Human Race line, as it became known, later extended into hiking and tennis footwear and crossed over with Nigo's Human Made and with Billionaire Boys Club itself. By the early 2020s the sheer volume of releases had cooled collector demand, and 2023's chunky NMD S1 MAHBS marked Williams's last release in the line, even as the wider Adidas relationship continued into footwear he designed independently of it. Chanel-Pharrell: a single-house exception
In October 2018, Williams appeared at Chanel's Cruise show in Bangkok wearing a sequinned hoodie carrying the house's interlocking-C insignia, signalling a collaboration that the two parties confirmed shortly afterward. The resulting Chanel-Pharrell capsule — around forty pieces spanning ready-to-wear, jewellery, sunglasses and sneakers, styled with a deliberately gender-fluid cast — launched exclusively at Chanel's new Seoul flagship on 29 March 2019 before a worldwide release on 4 April. It was, at the time, Chanel's first branded collaboration with an individual designer rather than an in-house creative director, and it remains the clearest example of Williams working inside a maison's codes without holding a title there. Louis Vuitton: Damoflage and a debut on the Pont Neuf
Louis Vuitton announced Williams as menswear creative director on 14 February 2023, effective immediately, filling a post left vacant since Virgil Abloh's death in November 2021. His contract reportedly commits only a third of his working hours to the house, structured to let him continue running his own ventures alongside it. His debut, the Spring/Summer 2024 ready-to-wear collection, was shown on 20 June 2023 on Paris's Pont Neuf, transformed for the occasion into a continuous run of the house's Damier check. Working with digital artist ET, Williams reworked the pattern into a pixelated, eight-bit-inspired treatment he called Damoflage — camouflage rendered in the brand's own checkerboard rather than military drab — applied across outerwear, denim, tailoring and accessories. After the Pont Neuf debut, Williams explored Western tailoring for Fall/Winter 2024 and Indian craft and dress for Spring/Summer 2026, the latter shown at the Centre Pompidou with a set made alongside architect Bijoy Jain. By September 2026 he had also presented a Spring/Summer 2027 collection. His Vuitton has been expansive in subject and staging, with the house’s bags and checks recurring through it. The million-dollar Speedy
In November 2023, Louis Vuitton unveiled a made-to-order version of the Speedy bag — a standard model of which retails for under $2,000 — finished in crocodile skin with a diamond-set gold chain and priced at roughly $1 million. The Millionaire Speedy drew immediate criticism online for being tone-deaf amid a cost-of-living crisis, and PETA's senior vice president Lisa Lange wrote an open letter reminding Williams that animal-rights groups had hoped his appointment might move the house away from exotic skins rather than showcase them at their most extreme. Williams did not withdraw the piece, and beaded and exotic-skin Speedy variants have continued to appear in later collections, including Spring/Summer 2027. The episode is a reasonable caution against reading his Louis Vuitton as simply more accessible than what came before it: the house's uppermost price tier, and the debates that attend it, persisted under his direction. Reading the different labels
Williams’s work appears under several labels. Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream use their own graphics and footwear marks; Adidas Human Race belongs to the sportswear partnership; Chanel-Pharrell was a 2019 capsule. Vuitton’s 2008 Blason jewellery also predates his menswear appointment. The label and collection date are essential when attributing any one piece.
At Louis Vuitton, the clearest dating marker is the Damoflage treatment of the Damier pattern, which appears only in collections from Spring/Summer 2024 onward — it is not retroactive, and a Damier piece without it may equally belong to Marc Jacobs's 1997–2014 tenure or Kim Jones's interim menswear seasons before Williams's arrival. The 2008 Blason jewellery, by contrast, sits entirely outside Williams's creative directorship: it was made under Jacobs's watch and should be catalogued as a Jacobs-era Louis Vuitton collaboration, not folded into Williams's design history simply because it carries his name. Season codes and house archives remain the only reliable way to place any individual piece precisely within that record.
