Raf Simons is co-creative director of Prada, sharing equal responsibility with Miuccia Prada since 2 April 2020. He is not the designer of Miu Miu, and Prada is now his only continuing fashion directorship: Simons closed his namesake label after twenty-seven years in 2022. Before Prada he led Jil Sander, Dior womenswear and Calvin Klein, an unusually varied sequence for a designer who began outside the fashion-school system. (Prada; Raf Simons)

Across those houses, his recurring subject has been youth—less as an age bracket than as a period when music, friends and clothes can construct an identity with overwhelming force. Simons pairs that emotional charge with the disciplined eye of an industrial designer. A narrow black suit, an enormous bomber, a school jumper bearing a photograph or a precise couture coat can all serve the same purpose: making private affiliation publicly visible.

Industrial design and a self-taught beginning

Simons was born in Neerpelt, Belgium, in 1968. He studied industrial and furniture design in Genk and graduated in 1991. During his studies he interned with Walter Van Beirendonck, helping with showroom and collection presentations; a trip with Van Beirendonck to Martin Margiela's all-white Spring 1990 show helped convince him that fashion could carry the intensity he sought in music and art. Linda Loppa, then head of Antwerp's fashion department, encouraged him to make clothes even though he had not studied garment design there. (Raf Simons; MoMu)

He launched Raf Simons in 1995 with a menswear presentation using street-cast models. The early silhouette was lean and exact: small-shouldered school blazers, narrow trousers, polos and sleeveless knits on boys who looked like members of a private club or band. This was not the broad, status-conscious masculinity common in 1990s designer menswear. Simons made sensitivity, awkwardness and obsessive fandom look authoritative. (Raf Simons; 032c)

Youth culture as archive and warning

The namesake label developed through tightly constructed worlds. Riot! Riot! Riot! for Fall 2001 looked to Manic Street Preachers, punk and protest: masked and layered models wore oversized bombers, hoodies and patches carrying images and charged words. Spring 2002's Woe Onto Those Who Spit on the Fear Generation… The Wind Will Blow It Back sent hooded figures with flares and banners through a darkened industrial space. Both collections captured adolescent anger without presenting it as harmless styling; group identity could protect, radicalise or consume the wearer. (GQ; 032c)

Spring 2003, Consumed, shifted from revolt to corporate desire. Logos for fictional and real entities covered stripped-back clothes; the collection asked what happens when identity is built from products and information. For Fall 2003's Closer, Simons received access to Peter Saville's graphic archive and placed imagery associated with Joy Division and New Order on parkas and other garments. The pieces later became resale trophies, but their original force came from treating a designer garment as a carrier for music history, personal memory and public allegiance. (Museo del Traje; Raf Simons)

Simons repeatedly worked with artists rather than borrowing their images anonymously. Peter De Potter shaped the label's graphic identity; Sterling Ruby's paintings, textiles and installations developed into a full Fall 2014 collaboration; Robert Mapplethorpe's foundation invited Simons to curate the photographer's work for Spring 2017. The result was a menswear practice in which casting, soundtrack, invitation, set and graphic object were as important as a jacket's cut. (Raf Simons; 032c)

Jil Sander: learning womenswear through restraint

Jil Sander appointed Simons creative director in July 2005, giving him responsibility for womenswear as well as menswear. He had never designed a full women's collection. Rather than treating the founder's minimalism as blankness, he studied its exact tailoring, technically advanced textiles and relationship between form and function. The appointment proved that the emotional youth designer could work inside an established industrial house. (Raf Simons; MoMu)

By Spring 2011, he was making couture scale from synthetic material. Fluorescent pink, orange, green and blue skirts expanded away from plain white T-shirts; volumes associated with mid-century haute couture were cut in nylon and polyester. The show began a celebrated three-season exploration of colour and displaced his reputation for sober menswear. Simons's achievement at Jil Sander was not to abandon minimalism, but to show that a precise idea can be visually enormous. (AnOther; The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

His final Jil Sander collection, Fall 2012, softened mid-century domestic clothes with pink, cream and pale blue before ending in black. Simons cried during the ovation. The public emotion mattered because his house work had never been impersonal: restraint was a container for feeling, not its absence. His tenure ended in February 2012 as Jil Sander herself returned to the label. (Raf Simons)

Dior: couture at modern speed

Dior appointed Simons artistic director of women's haute couture, ready-to-wear and accessories on 9 April 2012. He presented his first couture collection only eight weeks later. Five rooms of a Paris mansion were covered from floor to ceiling in fresh flowers, while the clothes compressed Christian Dior's archive—Bar jackets, mid-century skirt shapes and embroidered ball gowns—into clean trousers, short dresses and controlled volumes. The documentary Dior and I records both the compressed schedule and the atelier labour that made the debut possible. (Vogue; Le Monde)

Simons's Dior often placed historical silhouette against a contemporary surface. He used Andy Warhol drawings as embroidery, invited Sterling Ruby to translate paintings into fabric, and treated flowers as both Christian Dior's biography and almost abstract colour. His three-and-a-half-year tenure modernised the house without requiring him to mimic its founder's 1947 woman. He left in October 2015, citing a desire to attend to other interests and his own label. (MoMu; System)

Calvin Klein and an uneasy American epic

In August 2016, Simons became chief creative officer of Calvin Klein, a broader title than his Dior appointment. He was asked to align runway collections, denim, underwear, advertising and store image across an American mass-market company. The top runway line was renamed Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, after the Manhattan headquarters. (Raf Simons; GQ)

His collections examined America through its attractions and violence: cowboy shirts, quilts, cheerleaders, firemen, marching bands, Warhol screen prints, Hollywood horror and prairie clothing. Sterling Ruby filled the headquarters with hanging work, and an agreement with the Andy Warhol Foundation opened the artist's archive across products and campaigns. The project won Simons both the CFDA menswear and womenswear awards in 2017, but critical prestige and the commercial needs of the wider corporation did not align. Simons and Calvin Klein separated in December 2018. (Moda Operandi; Raf Simons)

Prada with Miuccia Prada, 2020–present

Prada announced Simons's appointment as co-creative director on 23 February 2020, effective 2 April. The wording was unusually precise: he and Miuccia Prada hold equal creative input and decision-making across the Prada label. Their first shared show was Spring 2021 womenswear, presented digitally during the pandemic and followed by a public conversation in which they answered questions submitted from around the world. (Prada; Prada Group)

The partnership works through friction rather than a neat division of tasks. Simons brings decades of thinking about uniforms, subculture, graphics and the psychology of menswear; Miuccia brings Prada's own system of nylon, bourgeois wrongness and suspicion toward easy beauty. Their collections have used severe wrap coats, holes cut from knitwear, trains attached to plain skirts, shrunken garments, aged surfaces and fragments of recognisable uniforms. Both designers speak after shows, often disagreeing or completing the other's thought in public. (Prada Group Journal; Associated Press)

Closing his namesake label in November 2022 separated Simons from the endless production cycle of an independent brand, but did not end his design career. The Spring 2023 collection shown in London was the label's last. As of September 2026 he remains Prada's co-creative director; later Prada products should therefore be treated as joint work rather than assigned to him alone. (Raf Simons; Prada Group Journal)

Reading and dating the work

The name “Raf Simons” can indicate his former independent label or the designer behind another house. A Prada care label does not become Raf Simons mainline, just as a Jil Sander garment from 2010 should not be catalogued under his personal brand. Attribution follows the house and season: Jil Sander from Fall 2006 through Fall 2012, Dior from Fall 2012 couture through Spring 2016, Calvin Klein's runway collections from Fall 2017 through Spring 2019, and Prada from Spring 2021 onward. Collection dates and retail delivery can overlap the employment dates at either end. (Raf Simons)

For the namesake line, graphics and collection titles are often the best first clues, but high resale values have also produced extensive counterfeiting. A familiar archival image on a modern reissue does not make the garment an original from 2001 or 2003. Production labels, season codes, construction and the exact licensed artwork all need to agree.

Simons's deepest influence is not any single bomber or sneaker collaboration. He gave fashion a language for the seriousness of adolescent taste, then carried that language into womenswear and couture without treating youth culture as something to outgrow. At Prada, the work has become a dialogue between two mature designers who remain willing to have their taste disturbed.
