Jun Takahashi is the founder, owner and continuing designer of Undercover. Since 1990 he has moved between screen-printed T-shirts, damaged knitwear, exact tailoring, technical running clothes, dolls, paintings and runway narratives without treating streetwear and high fashion as opposing careers. Punk supplied the first permission to disrupt; pattern cutting gave that disruption physical form. Undercover's familiar motto, “We Make Noise, Not Clothes,” is therefore less a rejection of dressmaking than a refusal to let a well-made garment become culturally quiet. (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; Vogue Japan)

As of September 2026, Takahashi still directs the label. In June, the publicly listed HUMAN MADE company signed a non-binding basic agreement to negotiate for all shares in Undercover, targeting a final agreement in September 2026 and completion in February 2027. No completed acquisition had been disclosed by 10 September, so Undercover should not yet be described as a HUMAN MADE subsidiary. The proposal nevertheless reconnects two careers that began together: HUMAN MADE's creative director NIGO and Takahashi opened NOWHERE in Harajuku in 1993. (HUMAN MADE filing; Fashionsnap)

Punk, school and a hand-printed beginning

Takahashi was born in the textile city of Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, in 1969. He entered Bunka Fashion College's apparel design course and formed a punk band called the Tokyo Sex Pistols, singing under the nickname Jonio, derived from Johnny Rotten. At Bunka he met Hironori Ichinose, later the designer of Vandalize, and the two began Undercover around 1990. Early work included hand-dyed, hand-screened T-shirts made with the resources available to students. (Fashionsnap; 2nd Street Japan)

He also met NIGO at Bunka in 1989. Their education extended beyond the classroom into clubs, record shops and magazines. In 1992 they inherited the Takarajima column Last Orgy 2 from Hiroshi Fujiwara and Kan Takagi, editing music, clothing and objects into a shared map of taste before the web could perform that function. In April 1993 they opened NOWHERE on a Harajuku backstreet: one half sold Undercover, while the other held NIGO's imported clothing and footwear, followed later that year by A Bathing Ape. (Fashionsnap)

NOWHERE helped establish what became known as 裏原宿 (Ura-Harajuku), literally the backstreets of Harajuku. Small owner-run shops, magazines, club culture and frequent collaborations allowed brands such as Undercover, BAPE, Neighborhood and WTAPS to build meaning through a community rather than mass advertising. Scarcity was partly material—the companies were small—but it also made each release an event. Undercover's distinction was that Takahashi carried this street-level communication into increasingly elaborate garment construction. (Fashionsnap; Pen)

From Tokyo to the Paris labyrinth

Undercover made its Tokyo runway debut for Autumn/Winter 1994. Takahashi was then working with a tiny atelier, but the language was already recognisable: everyday garments disturbed by graphics, unexpected openings, altered proportion and a mood in which sweetness could turn threatening. Tokyo Opera City later called its 25-year retrospective a “labyrinth” because clothes, film, photography, painting and dolls formed interlocking rooms rather than a single linear style. (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; Shibuya Parco)

Paris began with the Spring/Summer 2003 collection SCAB. Its patched, visibly repaired and rough-edged surfaces translated punk's do-it-yourself economy into laborious handwork. The following years included Paper Doll, Languid and But Beautiful, collections in which damaged elegance, miniature narratives and painstaking finish refused the assumption that polish and destruction were opposites. The much-collected “85” denim belongs to this period of repair as image: torn sections, contrast cloth and stitching make damage part of the garment's construction rather than evidence of accidental wear. (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; Pen)

Takahashi's world is dark, but seldom only grim. GRACE, a family of handmade creatures first developed around 2008, gave tenderness and domestic relationships to bodies assembled with visible seams and buttons. Later shows have drawn from Stanley Kubrick, Dario Argento, David Lynch, Pink Floyd and German electronic music, yet the strongest work does more than reproduce a film still or album cover. A cultural reference becomes casting, sound, silhouette and emotional pacing—a temporary world into which the clothes belong. (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; Numero Tokyo)

The 2015 Tokyo Opera City retrospective made clear how much of that world Takahashi produces himself. Alongside roughly one hundred collection looks were show films, graphics, paintings, dolls and a reconstruction of his working space. He organised the exhibition without an outside curator, making the visitor move through its conflicting rooms as they might move through his references. It was not an attempt to elevate clothes by calling them art; it showed that each medium performs a different part of the same narrative work. (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; F.M.J.)

Beauty made unstable

Undercover repeatedly stages incompatible feelings inside one look. A severe coat can open onto floating chiffon; a school uniform can carry an image of horror; a technical parka can be cut with the sensitivity of couture. Takahashi has described his starting point as an image or feeling whose specific theme may take days to emerge. That process accounts for the collections' narrative clarity without reducing them to costumes illustrating a fixed script. (Numero Tokyo; SSENSE Japan)

The Spring/Summer 2024 womenswear show made the unstable boundary unusually literal. Illuminated terrarium dresses carried living flowers and butterflies beneath transparent skirts, turning a woman walking at night into both wearer and moving environment. For Spring/Summer 2025, Daily Fetish placed soft linen and sweatshirt material against fetish details while Wim Wenders's text Watching a Working Woman was read aloud. Neither collection escaped daily life; each disclosed the unease or fantasy already within it. (Vogue Japan)

The live butterflies also made the 2024 finale ethically consequential. After PETA objected, Takahashi wrote that he had worried about the animals and arranged for their release after the show, but accepted that confining them had been wrong. He apologised and promised not to use butterflies or other living animals in his work again. The response belongs beside the dress's acclaim: visual force does not cancel responsibility for how an image is produced. (WWD Japan)

Menswear has given Takahashi a parallel space for autobiography. At Pitti Uomo in January 2018, Undercover and Takahiro Miyashita's TheSoloist presented consecutive shows linked only by the paired themes “order–disorder” and “disorder–order”; neither designer saw the other's work beforehand. Undercover's collection imagined young people resisting an oppressive technological order, but its emotional charge came through garments, music and staging rather than a conventional heroic costume. (GQ Japan)

Running, collaboration and wider access

Takahashi is a committed distance runner, and in 2010 that practice became NikeLab Gyakusou. The Japanese name 逆走 (gyakusō) means running in the opposite direction. Rather than apply Undercover graphics to standard kit, the partnership arranged storage, ventilation, stretch and weather protection around what Takahashi experienced while moving. It put personal use and Nike's sports engineering into the same design process, creating one of fashion's most sustained technical-running collaborations. (Livedoor News; Nike interview release)

Other partnerships have tested different scales. UU, made with Uniqlo in 2012, translated colour, family dressing and layered basics into mass production. Work with Valentino for 2019 joined Takahashi's science-fiction graphics to Pierpaolo Piccioli's couture-inflected collection, with related pieces appearing in both houses' Paris shows. These projects broadened access without making the main Undercover line a diffusion product. (Fashionsnap; WWD Japan)

Collaboration can also expose the difference between a motif and a design method. Nike supplies performance research; Valentino supplies couture ateliers and a different scale of silhouette; a licensed film supplies images with an existing audience. Takahashi's contribution is the disturbance that binds them to Undercover—an altered seam, an emotional contradiction or a graphic placed where it changes how the body is read. Merely finding the same collaborator's name on a garment does not mean it belongs to the same collection or carries the same authorship balance. (Fashionsnap; Numero Tokyo)

Reading an Undercover label

The line and season determine attribution. UNDERCOVER is the principal collection; Undercoverism has been used at different times for menswear and as a revived project, while The Shepherd Undercover applies Takahashi's ideas to a quieter adult wardrobe. JohnUNDERCOVER, SueUNDERCOVER, MADSTORE and collaboration labels occupy other price and product contexts. A seller using “Undercoverism” as a generic synonym for all Undercover can therefore obscure useful dating evidence. (Numero Tokyo; Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery)

Japanese care labels and product codes should be photographed in full. Graphics recur, and licensed images may return years after the collection that first used them; a Pink Floyd or Twin Peaks motif alone does not establish season. Compare code, fabrication and runway or lookbook evidence. For early hand-made pieces, provenance and construction matter especially because documentation is scarce and later reproductions exist. Garments made after any future HUMAN MADE transaction would still require Undercover season evidence—the ownership of a company is not the same thing as the designer of an individual piece.
