Junya Watanabe

Junya Watanabe occupies an unusual place in fashion: his name appears on the label, his creative direction is his own, and yet his entire career has unfolded inside Comme des Garçons. He is not the designer of a cheaper Rei Kawakubo diffusion line, nor did he leave her company to found an independent business. Comme des Garçons established his namesake collection in 1992 and continues to produce it; Watanabe supplies a separate design language built around pattern cutting, textile experiments and the reconstruction of familiar clothes. That distinction matters when looking at the clothes. Kawakubo may question whether an object needs to remain clothing at all. Watanabe usually keeps its function legible—a biker jacket is still wearable as a biker jacket, a parka still protects the body—but pushes its pattern, material or assembly far beyond the expected. In a Japanese interview, he described his and Kawakubo's ideas of beauty as fundamentally different and suggested that this difference was the reason his own label needed to exist. (T Japan, part 3)

From Fukushima to the pattern room

Watanabe was born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1961. His mother ran a small dressmaking shop, which he has offered as one possible early influence, though he resists neat origin stories about becoming a designer. He studied at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo and joined Comme des Garçons as a patternmaker after graduating in 1984. (T Japan)

Patternmaking is the engineering stage between a sketch and a garment: the pattern determines how flat pieces of cloth become volume around a moving body. Beginning there helps explain why Watanabe's most radical work rarely feels like decoration placed on top of a conventional dress. The transformation is structural. Pleats open and collapse; repeated modules create a new surface; parts of one garment become the pattern pieces of another.

In 1987 he became chief designer of Tricot Comme des Garçons, the group's knitwear label, and later worked on Comme des Garçons menswear. In 1992 the company created Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons for him. He presented the first collection in Tokyo, including a show in the concourse of Ryōgoku Station, then moved his womenswear presentation to Paris in 1993. Contemporary Japanese profiles and Watanabe's 30th-anniversary interview agree on that sequence, which is sometimes compressed into an incorrect 1993 launch date. (Vogue Japan; System)

Watanabe is famously sparing with biography and interpretation. He rarely takes a runway bow and usually answers questions about a collection in a few sentences. That reserve is not evidence that the work lacks ideas. It reflects his conviction that making is the argument: in a 1995 Japanese interview, when asked to explain himself, he answered, “Look at the clothes. Monozukuri: thinking through making

The Japanese word Watanabe repeatedly uses for his practice is ものづくり (monozukuri)—literally, making things. It can imply the joined craft, technical knowledge and production process through which an object is developed. For Watanabe, an idea often becomes clear through repeated work with a material in the studio rather than through a long narrative imposed before the garment exists. He has described it as a process of thinking with both his head and his hands. (T Japan; System)

This is why one collection may concentrate on a single textile or construction problem. Synthetic fabrics are not used merely to look futuristic: their weight, memory, water resistance or ability to hold a pleat becomes the design. The same method applies to old workwear. A recognisable jacket gives him a set of constraints; cutting it apart and rebuilding it reveals how that garment works.

Landmark collections: rain, air and “Techno Couture”

The Spring 2000 collection, Function and Practicality, made technical research into theatre. Watanabe worked with Japanese textile company Toray on water-repellent fabrics, then sent the models through artificial rain so drops visibly bounced from the clothes. The dresses were not dour shells: they were bright, printed, reversible and transformable. A scarf could unfold into part of a skirt; a dress could be unfastened and turned into another colour. For Fall 2000, he moved from water to air. Watanabe called the collection Techno Couture: narrow dresses carried enormous honeycomb ruffs and sculptural volumes made from polyester organza. The ruffs looked laborious because they were—each was formed by hand sewing—yet they could collapse flat enough to be stored in an envelope. Traditional couture labour and a synthetic industrial material were not treated as opposites. The construction joined them. The Metropolitan Museum of Art now holds an ensemble from the collection and describes its controlled imperfection as central to Watanabe's idea of beauty. Those two shows remain useful introductions because they make an otherwise quiet working method visible. Later collections have applied the same discipline to nylon, down, trench coats, biker jackets, military uniforms, mathematical geometry, historical dress and denim. The outward theme changes; the persistent question is what a garment can become without losing the knowledge embedded in its original form.

Menswear and collaboration as a design tool

Watanabe presented his first men's collection in Paris in summer 2001 for Spring/Summer 2002. Where his womenswear pursued original forms, he wanted the men's line to begin with orthodox, authentic clothes. The debut therefore used genuine Levi's 501 jeans printed with phrases written by members of his studio. A copy could reproduce the five-pocket shape, he later explained, but only Levi's could supply the cultural and material “real thing” of a Levi's 501. Collaboration let him alter an archetype without pretending he had invented it. (Vogue)

That idea became one of the most influential parts of his practice. Watanabe has since worked with Carhartt, The North Face, New Balance, Nike, Converse, Brooks Brothers, Baracuta, Moncler and many others. He may graft a Carhartt workwear panel into tailored outerwear, turn a North Face duffel into the back of a jacket, or combine seasonal fabrics across a Levi's pattern. The partner's identity is not just an extra logo. It contributes a real manufacturing history, a known function and a form for Watanabe to respect, expose and transform.

Collaborations are now routine luxury marketing, but Watanabe's version is closer to joint material research. He says that he usually approaches the companies himself, designs freely, and aims to bring an “unimaginable” level of creativity to the original while respecting it. His method also makes the source visible rather than hiding reference or appropriation behind a house name. (Vogue)

Understanding the labels

The names have changed, but the authorship has not. The womenswear label began in 1992 as Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons. Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons Man was first shown in 2001, and the collaboration-focused secondary men's line eYe Comme des Garçons Junya Watanabe Man followed in 2005. From Spring 2022, the public-facing names were shortened to Junya Watanabe, Junya Watanabe MAN and eYe Junya Watanabe MAN. The removal of “Comme des Garçons” from the wordmark did not signal that Watanabe had left the company. (Fashion Press Japan; 2nd Street Japan)

Mainline MAN and eYe are related but not interchangeable. MAN carries the seasonal Paris collection; eYe began as a secondary line for Watanabe's own stores and has leaned especially heavily on functional sportswear and collaborations. Older resale listings frequently collapse both into “Junya x CDG,” which loses useful information about the season and line.

A Watanabe garment still participates in the Comme des Garçons production and date-code system. Why the work matters

Watanabe's influence is easiest to see in two ideas fashion now takes for granted: that advanced textile engineering can be the subject of a ready-to-wear collection, and that collaboration can create a genuinely new garment rather than a co-branded colourway. His best work balances experiment with use. A honeycomb collar may belong in a museum; a reconstructed work jacket can improve through years of wear. Both come from the same patient attention to how a thing is made.

Calling him simply Kawakubo's protégé understates a four-decade career. Watanabe himself describes their relationship more plainly as that of company president and employee, while acknowledging how much he learned inside Comme des Garçons. The productive fact is that the company made room for difference: his studio remains within its structure, but the clothes speak in his own voice. (System; Vogue)
