Peter Copping
British designer who led Nina Ricci and Oscar de la Renta, rebuilt Balenciaga couture, and has led Lanvin as creative director since 2024.
Peter Copping has been Lanvin's creative director since September 2024, arriving at a house that had shown no runway collection for roughly two years. He is British, trained in London, and had already run two storied houses — Nina Ricci and Oscar de la Renta — before spending three years rebuilding Balenciaga's couture ateliers from the inside, unnamed on any runway credit. Commentators framed the appointment as a reversal of the industry's recent habit of handing storied houses to untested names: Copping arrived as one of the most experienced creative directors changing address that year. The throughline is not a signature silhouette but a working method: Copping's career has been spent inside other people's archives, deciding how much of a house's founding language to keep legible and how much to let go quiet. "Fashion for me is an applied art," he has said, "and I find that both pathways can possess creative potential while also being commodities." (Cabana)
From a shop counter to a couture internship
Copping studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins before continuing at the Royal College of Art in London. While still a student he worked at the Conran Shop, where a regular customer turned out to be Christian Lacroix; the encounter led to an internship across five of Lacroix's couture collections in Paris; and, in Copping's own account, "cemented" his wish to live and work there. Early jobs followed at Iceberg in Milan and at Sonia Rykiel in Paris. (Monocle) From Rykiel he moved to Louis Vuitton, where he spent over a decade as head of womenswear under Marc Jacobs while the house built its ready-to-wear business into a fashion-week fixture — senior enough to shape the studio's output, but working in Jacobs' name rather than his own. (Lanvin Group)
The two formative jobs pulled in different directions: Lacroix's ateliers taught the hand-work of couture, built collection by collection around an individual client, while Vuitton's studio taught the opposite discipline, translating a single creative vision into a ready-to-wear collection produced at global scale. Copping has spent the decades since moving between those two registers rather than settling into one. He now divides his time between an apartment in Paris and La Carlière, a fifteenth-century manor in Normandy he shares with his husband. (Cabana)
A first chair at Nina Ricci
Copping was named creative director of Nina Ricci in April 2009, succeeding Olivier Theyskens. It was his first house to run in his own name, after a decade spent building someone else's. He presented his final Nina Ricci collection on 25 September 2014, closing a five-year tenure, and moved directly into the vacancy left by the death of another house's founder. Oscar de la Renta: a succession cut short
Oscar de la Renta personally chose Copping as his successor, announcing him as the house's first creative director in October 2014. Weeks later, de la Renta died, and Copping took up the role that November — the house's first designer to run it without its founder present at all. He stayed under two years: on 21 July 2016 he announced his departure, saying, "After almost two years at Oscar de la Renta, personal circumstances require me to return to Europe. I have loved my time in New York where I hope to return at some point in the future." Chief executive Alex Bolen responded with studied continuity: "We wish Peter well in his future endeavours," adding that the studio and atelier would carry on developing the house's coming collections around its established sophistication and craftsmanship. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, previously of Monse, took over as joint creative directors afterward. (FashionUnited; Refinery29; Grazia)
Balenciaga: three years without a byline
Copping's next role broke the pattern of running a house in his own name. He joined Balenciaga in 2021 as head of couture, just as Demna was reviving the label's haute couture line — closed by Cristóbal Balenciaga himself in 1968 — for the first time in more than fifty years. Copping directed the ateliers translating Demna's ideas into couture construction, then moved into a role leading VIP and special projects, where his work included Kim Kardashian's blacked-out 2021 Met Gala gown. None of it carried his name publicly; the runway credit throughout belonged to Demna. (Dazed)
Lanvin: excavating a house's own instincts
Lanvin Group announced Copping as creative director on 27 June 2024, effective that September, with responsibility for both womenswear and menswear. Chairman Zhen Huang called Lanvin, founded in 1889, one of "the most celebrated names in fashion worldwide"; chief executive Eric Chan credited Copping's "capacity to reinterpret the codes of the Maison with curiosity and innovation." Copping himself framed the job as a continuation of his own interests: "Jeanne Lanvin was a visionary of her time whose interests and passions extended far beyond fashion, as do my own." (Lanvin Group)
Copping's first move on arrival was to ask for the archive. "I couldn't wait to see it," he has said of walking into the house. "As soon as I got through the door, I asked, 'Well, where is it?'" His method there was selective rather than reconstructive: "I didn't want to be overly academic about it. I cherry-picked items and tried to make them feel contemporary." Beyond the trainers that had carried much of Lanvin's recent commercial identity, he has said he intends to build out categories the house once did well and had let go quiet — knitwear, day wear and menswear among them. (Monocle)
His debut, shown on the final day of Paris Fashion Week on 26 January 2025 at the Pavillon Gabriel, was Lanvin's first runway outing in roughly two years and combined womenswear with a first full menswear line under his direction. "The more I learned about Jeanne Lanvin, the more I realised she was an incredibly wonderful woman in terms of creativity," he said of the research behind it. The collection folded couture techniques — hand draping, embroidery — into wearable pieces including T-shirts and knitwear, aimed at both the founder's Art Deco-era glamour and the ready-to-wear categories the house had left underdeveloped. (Fashionsnap)
As of September 2026, Copping remains Lanvin's creative director, continuing to show womenswear and menswear each season; the house's own site was presenting an Autumn 2026 collection, "Character Studies: The Final Chapter," under his direction. (Lanvin)
Copping's career resists the standard narrative of a single signature carried from house to house. Read in sequence, it reads instead as a study in institutional stewardship: a decade learning the trade inside someone else's studio at Vuitton, two houses run briefly in his own name and each cut short — one by a founder's death, one by his own choice to leave — three years of uncredited couture construction at Balenciaga, and now a fifth house where, for the first time since Nina Ricci, his name and the collection shown under it are again treated as the same thing.
Reading and dating the work
No Louis Vuitton, Nina Ricci-predecessor, or Balenciaga garment carries Copping's name as designer of record, which makes attribution a matter of dates rather than labels for most of his career. A Louis Vuitton piece from his years there belongs to the Marc Jacobs studio as a whole; there is no way to isolate his individual hand inside a large design team, and the house does not credit him. At Nina Ricci, only collections shown between his April 2009 appointment and the 25 September 2014 show are his; earlier pieces belong to Olivier Theyskens, later ones to his successors.
Oscar de la Renta needs particular care around both hinge dates. Garments designed for the house immediately after his October 2014 appointment may still reflect work the founder himself had already set in motion before his death, since a creative director's arrival does not instantly erase a season already in progress; only collections from spring/summer 2015 onward are unambiguously Copping's design. At the other end, anything from autumn/winter 2016 onward belongs to his successors, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, not to him.
Balenciaga presents the opposite problem: everything from his 2021–2024 tenure there was shown, labelled and reported under Demna's creative direction, since Copping held an atelier and special-projects role rather than the house's own credited design position — a Balenciaga couture piece from those years reflects his construction work but is correctly attributed, on any label or resale listing, to Demna. Lanvin is the first house where Copping's name and the garment's design credit are the same thing: pieces shown from his 26 January 2025 debut onward are identifiably his, while Lanvin stock predating that show belongs to Bruno Sialelli's tenure or earlier.
Within his own Lanvin output, the category matters as much as the date. The house's trainers and logo-driven sportswear were established under earlier creative directors and remain in production largely unchanged; Copping's own stated priority has been the categories around them — tailoring, knitwear and day wear rebuilt from the house archive — so a Lanvin trainer says little about who was in charge when it was made, while a draped or embroidered piece from a post-January-2025 season is a more reliable marker of his particular hand.
