Her garments were often dark, oversized, and asymmetrical, challenging Western definitions of beauty and feminine fashion. She studied fine arts and aesthetics at Keio University. Kawakubo was committed to offering women clothes designed for mobility and comfort, never designing stilettos. Her work is rooted in concepts, straddling art and fashion.
