UNDERCOVER is the mainline at the center of Jun Takahashi's work. Around it sit named menswear and womenswear lines—UNDERCOVERISM, John UNDERCOVER, Sue UNDERCOVER, and the Shepherd UNDERCOVER—plus retail collaborations and performance projects such as GYAKUSOU. The wording on the label matters because each name points to a different period or product brief. A tag that simply says UNDERCOVER belongs to the mainline.

How UNDERCOVER grew beyond the mainline

Jun Takahashi and Hironori Ichinose founded UNDERCOVER in 1990 while studying at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. The Japanese Fashion Week brand profile dates the first collection to 1994–95 and the Paris debut to 2002. In 1993 Takahashi opened NOWHERE in Harajuku with NIGO, who later co-founded A BATHING APE with SK8THING. NOWHERE became an important shop and meeting point in the emerging Ura-Harajuku scene.

UNDERCOVER made its first Paris presentation in October 2002 for Spring/Summer 2003. Takahashi has credited encouragement from Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo as part of the move.

UNDERCOVER often gives seasonal collections their own titles. Recorded examples include "Exchange" (1998) and "CREEP VERY" for Autumn/Winter 2021; the latter show included Neon Genesis Evangelion imagery and collaboration pieces. A collection title can therefore be a useful search term when dating a garment.

In June 2026, HUMAN MADE disclosed plans to acquire 100% of UNDERCOVER Co., Ltd. The published schedule targeted a binding share-transfer agreement for September 2026, execution in February 2027, and consolidation from the first quarter of the fiscal year ending January 2028. Those announced corporate steps do not change the historical line identities described here.

UNDERCOVER (Mainline): Outerwear and Tailoring

This is the collection reviewed in fashion press and the line most commonly encountered in resale. The current official shop covers men's, women's, and kids' products. Mainline clothing moves between tailoring, outerwear, graphics, and narrative collection pieces; outerwear in our catalog currently runs from roughly $900 to $1,900.

UNDERCOVER (Mainline): Graphics and Entry Pieces

The same mainline also includes printed and slogan T-shirts, generally $150–$500 in Wardatrobe, alongside its higher-priced runway pieces. Recurring graphic and text motifs make these useful collection identifiers, although graphics alone cannot establish authenticity.

UNDERCOVERISM

UNDERCOVERISM first appeared as a men's line for Spring/Summer 2009. Its name was folded into the broader UNDERCOVER presentation in 2015, then rebuilt for Autumn/Winter 2021 with the 44-piece "Neoboy" collection. The relaunch positioned it as a distinct men's project with a younger styling brief. The official UNDERCOVER store retains a seasonal UNDERCOVERISM archive, while recent navigation centers on UNDERCOVER and the Shepherd; use the collection season as well as the label name when identifying a piece.

John UNDERCOVER, the Shepherd UNDERCOVER, and Sue UNDERCOVER

John UNDERCOVER for men and Sue UNDERCOVER for women launched in 2013 as second lines. Takahashi described their process as mainly handled by UNDERCOVER's in-house planning and design staff under his direction and approval. That makes them house-designed lines rather than collections drawn entirely by Takahashi himself. Wardatrobe has dedicated brand pages for both names.

the Shepherd UNDERCOVER began in Autumn/Winter 2016 as a men's line released on a seasonless or irregular rhythm around clothes Takahashi wanted to wear himself. Current official releases, including a January 2026 jacket, confirm that the Shepherd remains active. Its quieter tailoring and personal wardrobe focus distinguish it from the narrative runway mainline.

UU, Uniqlo UnderCover, and GU × UNDERCOVER: the Mass-Market Versions

The names around Takahashi's Fast Retailing projects are easy to collapse into one continuous line, but the releases came in defined runs:

  • UU launched in March 2012 as a one-year Uniqlo collaboration spanning baby, kids', women's, and men's clothing, as recorded in Uniqlo's launch announcement. Takahashi and RICO, also known as Riko Morishita, jointly designed the baby and kids' portion. Kids-only UU collections returned in 2014 and 2015, with Uniqlo calling 2015 the final collection.
  • Uniqlo Undercover is best read as a general description of that collaboration, not a separate adult line that has run continuously since 2011.
  • GU × UNDERCOVER began in 2021 and returned for a second drop that year, a third collaboration in 2024, and later releases. It is a recurring capsule partnership with GU.

These are mass-market collaborations with their own retail positioning. Uniqlo or GU co-branding identifies the release and should remain visible in a resale listing title.

GYAKUSOU

GYAKUSOU is Takahashi's running and activewear project with Nike. Nike's Japanese archive dates the first collection to October 2010. It combines Nike performance development with Takahashi's running experience and design direction. Pieces may be cataloged under Nike or GYAKUSOU while remaining part of UNDERCOVER's collaboration history, so search all three names when identifying older releases.

THE NORTH FACE × UNDERCOVER SOUKUU

SOUKUU is a performance collaboration between UNDERCOVER and The North Face. The first collection arrived for Fall/Winter 2023, followed by a second season in Spring 2024. It combines trail and outdoor construction with Takahashi's design language, making it the clearest recent counterpart to GYAKUSOU even though the partner and sport context differ.

The Rest of the Mainline: What Turns Up in Resale

Beyond outerwear and tees, the mainline also produces trousers, hoodies (including collaborations, such as one with Eastpak), and a small accessories range. This is the breadth that shows up most often once you go looking for UNDERCOVER on the resale market.

How to Read the Label

  1. Read the exact text on the woven tag. "UNDERCOVER" alone is mainline. UNDERCOVERISM, John UNDERCOVER, the Shepherd UNDERCOVER, Sue UNDERCOVER, Uniqlo, and GU identify separate lines or collaborations.
  2. For GYAKUSOU and SOUKUU, keep both the partner and UNDERCOVER names in your search. Collaboration branding is part of the piece's identity.
  3. If the piece carries a named collection title rather than a season code, look up that title. It is more precise than guessing a year from the silhouette.
  4. Match the line name to its known active period. John and Sue point to the 2013 second-line project; the Shepherd begins in 2016; UNDERCOVERISM can point to either its 2009–15 run or the 2021 relaunch.
  5. Corporate transaction dates do not redate a garment. Use the collection name, care label, product code, and collaboration branding together.

The product code itself resolves the season directly: in UC2E4310 the third character is the season and the fourth is the year. See how to date UNDERCOVER by the product code on the tag.
